Open Office has been around for decades and is an accepted "open format" suite that works on Windows and Linux systems.
Yes there are still people who actually pay for Microsoft office, which can run from $249.99 to $399.99 depending on personal or professional package. However there are more and more people and small businesses turning to FREE, supported office suites.
There are several well know, well supported and standard format office suites that are free and becoming more mainstream daily. These include Apache OpenOffice, LibreOffice, WPS Office and Polaris Office, just to name a few of the most prominent.
Most of these offer complete offices suites such as a word processor/editor, spreadsheets, database, presentations, and much more. Most of these suites are available for Windows and Linux-based PCs as well as Android and iOS. These can run on computers, tablets and phones. Many are also available for Macintosh such as LibreOffice.
It is also comforting to know that these open document formats (ODF) have been standardized decades ago allowing seamless cross compatibility between users. Also the licenses are generally open, such as the GPL, MPL or Apache-2.0 license, so they are free to use and share.

So save yourself a couple hundred dollars by switching to an open office software. You can also give free copies to your children, parents and friends. And for a business, saving a couple to four hundred dollars per computer, will really add up.
